Lazy Chess is a free, non-profit game created for casual and enthusiastic players, where players, at worst, make the second best move available to them.
On average, there are more than 30 legal chess moves available to a player in one round, creating several possibilities throughout a game.
Lazy Chess compresses this by making you choose only two at a given turn selected by Stockfish, the most robust chess engine in the world.
I don’t really like chess, but I WANT to like chess.
I think the rules and strategies are interesting, and I can understand why it is such a respected and long-lasting game.
This new mobile game Lazy Chess also wants me to like it and is able to do that with some very smart design decisions.
There are more variations and unique approaches to Chess than you can imagine, but Lazy Chess does not really fall into these categories.
This is a straightforward version of chess, but the crucial change is that the game uses AI to offer you the two best moves each time it’s your turn to play.
It doesn’t say which move is the BEST given the situation, but you have a 50/50 chance on it.
And that’s it. This is the game. It uses the highly rated Stockfish Chess engine to determine which moves to show you, and if you choose the best of the two moves, it will let you know, and if you choose the worst of the two moves, it will also let you know.
It is like having an expert chess player sitting on your shoulder during a game, telling you what to do, but also allowing you to make your own decisions and mistakes.
The downside is that just by looking at the two moves offered each turn and then taking note of when you choose the best or the worst option, you find yourself slowly learning the game on a deeper level and really improving your own game. And apparently that was the intention of the developers as well. Lazy Chess is really making me like Chess.
The binary nature of choosing one move each shift makes it look like Reigns and Chess had a baby. I just wanted Lazy Chess to use the same Tinder swipe gestures that Reigns uses to make the game even more natural. If you are on the other side of the spectrum and consider yourself a chess big shot, I still think you will find a lot to have fun at Lazy Chess. There are a lot of unlockable things like new board designs and pieces, unlockable difficulty levels so you can increase things to your liking and even the ability to play against other players online.
Lazy Chess is also completely free to download and play with ads and a unique IAP to unlock an ad-free version of the game. Even if you think you don’t like chess, it’s worth checking out Lazy Chess for free, because not only is it a very good teaching tool, but if you disregard it as a chess game, it’s basically just a good puzzle game. head.
