The game is trying to bring into the turn-based strategy genre what Clash Royale did for MOBA.
It distills the essence of what makes these games so good at something you can pick up and play in mobile gaming sessions.
And it works very well. There is a depth here that you may not be expecting and a simplicity that makes things easy enough for anyone to experience the game.
It looks great, plays great and there is a lot of fun in its tactical skirmishes.
The game shows you building a team of warriors to crush the bad guys.
They all have different skills, strengths and weaknesses, so balancing your face punches with nimble strokes and magic wielders is the key.
Each level takes a few minutes to complete, but there is everything you would expect here.
You need to make use of the terrain, eliminate powerful enemies quickly and think about the positioning of the unit if you want to win.
You equip new items to energize your characters and you can design new ones, or fragments to energize the ones you already have, using mechanics.
There is a decent level of experimentation here, as you try to discover the strongest team you have at your disposal.
Units can move, attack and (some of them, at least) heal.
They also have special single-use moves that can change the course of the battle.
This can involve powerful attacks, group healing, attracting aggro or releasing AI units on the battlefield.
There is a decent pace for action here and many different modes – including multiplayer – that will keep you on your toes.
Rivengard is the type of game that is very difficult not to like, and we think you will have a lot of fun playing, download it soon.
